MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!
For 15 long weeks my mother and I have been keeping the biggest secret possible to mankind from my father. This secret was something that I could only tell my father face to face. And as painful as it was for my mother to live what she described as a “secret life” she managed to keep her lips sealed for three LONG months.
Anyone that knows me knows that I am a planner. So, of course the big reveal was something that was well thought out. We flew home the Thursday before Christmas and Christmas morning was the BIG DAY. I envisioned that morning hearing my two nieces run into the living room overcome with joy because of all the gifts from Santa; and after they opened their last gift that would be my queue to make our BIG announcement.
But, that morning was a little different than I imagine. I woke up to the sounds of my mom, aunt, and grandmother in the kitchen preparing for Christmas dinner, my father in the shower, and no kids to be found. First, my sister and nieces had not arrived. Secondly, once they did arrive my father realized that we didn’t have any eggs for breakfast so he ran to the store. Lastly, I was trying to get the camera ready to take the "million dollar shot" of my dad’s face and for some reason the camera wouldn’t work. At this point I just wanted to scream!! This was too much for me to handle all at once. So I took a deep breath and prayed…. Lord PLEASE HELP ME! Finally after reading the manual I was able to get the camera working!! Thank GOD!!!
The moment is finally here the kids were opening their last gift and this was my queue. I was so excited and nervous at the same time. It was time. I told my father that I had a gift and a card for him and I wanted him to read the card out loud. I handed him his reading glasses and the card and he started reading it. Everything was going great but I noticed he was struggling a little. What I didn’t realize was I picked up the wrong reading glasses and my poor dad couldn’t see. So my mom signaled for me to read the card for him. So I read…..
“You know I love you, dad. You know I think the world of you.
I am giving you this hankie, Because I have some news.
You are such a perfect parent. You are my shining star.
I hope I can follow you, and be half the parent that you are.
If you should need to wipe a tear, this hankie is here for you.
You see, the news I'm telling you, I’m going to be a parent too.
Congratulations Pop Pop!
As soon as I read the line ….I am going to be a parent too, the look my dad gave me was priceless! He was so happy for my husband and I. We all began to hug one another and that moment was something I will never forget.
Thanks you’s:
Thanks again to my mother who was able to hold out and not tell my father.
Thank you to Kim, who helped me find this beautiful poem online!!!! It was perfect!!
